Marking as our biggest internal event for the year, JurisTech Hackathon 2020 was a platform to encourage our software engineers to step out of the box, stimulate their creative juices, and foster problem-solving and risk-taking in a casual environment.

Quoting our Chief Technology Officer (CTO), John Lim, “We want to set all our software engineers up to win!”

Hence, on 28th November 2020, 9 teams came together virtually to save the world from hackers aiming to annihilate all payment gateway companies aka “Operation Code J”. 

These 9 teams were formed during the Initialisation event on the 15th October 2020. More than 30 software engineers in our company gathered to mingle and break the ice. They then formed teams of 3-4 members to participate in the hackathon.

On the event day itself, the teams had only less than 6 hours to complete all missions in Operation Code J. The missions include elements of security, performance tuning, testing, and design.

The Security mission was conducted using Capture the Flag (CTF) style. “Flags” were secrets hidden in purposefully-vulnerable programs or websites. Teams had to steal flags from the organisers (Jeopardy-style CTFs). The Jeopardy-style CTFs have a couple of tasks in a range of categories. Teams will gain points for each solved task. The more complex the task, the higher the points. Next, in the Performance Tuning mission, teams had to fine-tune a perfectly working sample code that takes 20 hours to run. Rules were created to validate transactions to categorise them as fraudulent or valid. Teams are to fine-tune this code and its database to get the highest possible performance while producing valid results. Lastly, teams had to design an integration system proposal that can handle the high volume of requests while ensuring its maintainability with test automation and any other way they can think of in the Design and Testing mission. It was a mission to test our software engineers’ knowledge in different areas such as the development methodology, quality assurance, and testing strategy, go-live and onboarding strategy, and monitoring and maintenance strategy.

It was intense, exhilarating, and fulfilling as teams got together to squeeze every ounce of their brain juice to solve tasks and provide solutions.

A big thank you to all the organisers, game masters, judges, contributors, and especially, our participants for making it such a successful virtual event!
