• PHP2Shell: How JurisTech Responded to Critical PHP Vulnerabilities

PHP, PHP2SHELL, PHP SECURITY, PHP VULNERABILITIES

On 20 October 2026, the PHP Security Team announced two critical vulnerabilities affecting the PHP runtime. On 21 October, the technical details and security patches were released.

Known as PHP2Shell (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619), these vulnerabilities could allow attackers to execute malicious code remotely on affected servers without authentication.

For financial institutions and other organisations relying on enterprise applications, this naturally raises concerns about security, business continuity and operational risk.

At JurisTech, we recognise the seriousness of such threats. More importantly, we believe our responsibility is to act promptly, communicate clearly and see remediation through.

Our Response: From Awareness to Action

We began responding before the security patches became available.

From the afternoon of 21 October, our teams were actively assessing the potential exposure, notifying customers and advising precautionary measures.
As the vulnerabilities and available fixes became clearer, our dedicated Rapid Response Team continued working into the early hours, providing technical guidance and coordinating mitigation and remediation activities with customers.

    Our response follows four priorities:

    1. Continuous Monitoring
We actively monitor emerging security threats, vendor advisories and vulnerabilities that could affect the technologies supporting our solutions.
    2. Rapid Mobilisation and Customer Communication
We assess potential exposure, mobilise the relevant specialists and proactively communicate recommended actions to affected customers.
    3. Immediate Safeguards and Business Continuity
We work with customers to implement the recommended security safeguards, validate their effectiveness and establish the appropriate conditions for restoring services.
    4. Permanent Remediation
As official security fixes become available, we coordinate patching, application validation and, where necessary, longer-term technology upgrades with our customers.

Temporary safeguards help reduce risk. Permanent remediation addresses the underlying vulnerabilities.

A Wider Lesson for the Software Industry

PHP2Shell is not an isolated reminder of the challenges facing modern software. In fact, on 20 October 2026, just one day before the PHP2Shell disclosure, Oracle released security updates addressing 55 vulnerabilities in Java SE, with 49 identified as potentially remotely exploitable without authentication.
We have seen similar challenges across other technology ecosystems: Spring4Shell in Java, React2Shell in JavaScript, and security vulnerabilities affecting Django in Python.

The message is clear: No programming language, framework or technology stack is immune to vulnerabilities.

As AI accelerates our ability to discover and analyse software weaknesses, the challenge for technology providers is no longer simply to build secure software. It is to continuously monitor, respond and remediate as threats emerge.

Security is not a one-time achievement. It is a continuous discipline.

The lesson is not that organisations should avoid particular programming languages or frameworks. It is that every technology requires diligent maintenance and responsible stewardship throughout its lifecycle.

    Our Commitment Beyond Go-Live

At JurisTech, our relationship with customers does not end when a system goes live.

Supporting financial institutions means standing behind the solutions we deliver—through evolving technology, changing requirements and emerging security challenges. It means responding with urgency when needed, working alongside our customers’ teams and taking responsibility for the issues within our scope until they are resolved.

Because delivering software is only the beginning. Standing behind it is the commitment. And for us, security is an ongoing responsibility, not just a response to an incident.
